As part of our mission here at The Wellness Kitchen, we provide valuable resources so you can learn how to better care for yourself or your loved one.
This includes our well-stocked library on site, classes on multiple subjects, a vast amount of local provider offerings and now our blog.
The more informed you are, the more you can make decisions based on what is right for you to stay healthy or regain your vitality. Sometimes the reason we feel helpless is because we just don't know!
One of the online resources that has up to date information and covers many critical subjects is "The Environmental Working Group, EWG.org.
They cover food safety, latest pesticide usage, child safety and health, cosmetic dangers, environmental challenges, farm issues and one of my favorite resources, "The Dirty Dozen". This is a yearly updated shoppers guide to pesticide use in produce.
We have a printed copy here for your convenience at The Wellness Kitchen or you can find one on the EWG website. They have also provided a sweet little tool, an app you can download right to your phone so when you shop all you need to do is call up your handy app to see which items you absolutely need to buy organic. They also have a "Clean 15". These items do not have to be organic. For example, avocados do not have to be organic, corn and papaya do not have to be unless they have been grown with genetically modified seeds. If they have been grown from GMO seeds, they must be organic.
For an in depth article on why strawberries top the list and why you need to only buy organic strawberries, check out their article here: https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/strawberries.php
Here at the kitchen we use only organic produce on that list. We strictly adhere to this because we know your health is our main concern!
In addition to the Dirty Dozen/Clean 15 app, they have "The Healthy Living" app. This app lets you scan an item using the UPC code right on the product in a store to rate the safety of the ingredients. You can find it here: http://www.ewg.org/foodscores?inlist=Y&sdfpp=1
We will touch on specific subjects in the coming weeks, but for now this resource will get you started in learning more about how everything we eat, what we put on our skin, what chemicals we use in our homes and surrounding environment impacts our health.
Happy reading!
In gratitude.
